The eventual symptom is failures to eject. You have to push down between the firing pin lug and the firing pin spacer sleeve. You are actually pushing down on the spacer sleeve to relieve pressure. Then you should be able to remove the slide cover plate. Be careful of spring pressure on the firing pin assembly and extractor depressor plunger assembly.
