The trick to martial weapons on Ruffian is generally to pick up something like Mauler, which has scaling proficiency and crit spec when you're expert+. You're still limited by Agile or Finesse to get sneak attack, though, which means you're limited to d8 anyway. There's not much out there that's much better than Longspear for Ruffians..
